In short: Annam Gourmet is the go-to chain for imported food in Ho Chi Minh City, with branches in District 1, Thao Dien, An Phu, Binh Thanh and District 7. Genshai and Finelife cover many of the same apartment complexes with smaller stores, while MM Mega Market, Lotte Mart and Emart handle the big weekly shop. Annam Gourmet: branches that matter for renters

Annam Gourmet stocks European, American, Australian and Japanese brands, plus a deli, bakery, wine and fresh produce. It is the priciest option on this list, but it is also where you will find specific brands you miss from home.

According to Annam Gourmet’s store locator, the Ho Chi Minh City branches currently are:

• District 1: 16-18 Hai Ba Trung (the flagship, open 07:00 to 21:00) and Saigon Centre basement B2, 67 Le Loi.
• Thao Dien: 41 Thao Dien Street, the Q2 building at 21 Vo Truong Toan, Masteri Thao Dien (tower T5, 159 Xa Lo Ha Noi) and Thao Dien Green (192 Nguyen Van Huong).
• An Phu and nearby: Vista Tower (628C Vo Nguyen Giap), Estella Place (88 Song Hanh) and Feliz en Vista (1 Phan Van Dang).
• Binh Thanh: Opal Tower at Saigon Pearl (92 Nguyen Huu Canh) and Landmark 81 (Landmark D, 772 Dien Bien Phu).
• Phu Nhuan: 184 Nguyen Van Troi.
• District 7: Riverpark Premier (64-70 Nguyen Duc Canh) and The Ascentia (51-73 Nguyen Luong Bang).

Thao Dien has the densest coverage. Most branches open at 07:00 and close between 21:00 and 21:45. Annam also takes orders online for delivery.

Genshai supermarket and Finelife: the compound stores

Genshai is a Vietnamese chain that sits inside apartment complexes. It sells everyday Vietnamese groceries alongside a reasonable range of imported snacks, dairy and household goods, at prices closer to a regular supermarket than to Annam.

Genshai’s own store list shows six branches, including Saigon Pearl (Sapphire building, 92 Nguyen Huu Canh), Richmond City (207C Nguyen Xi), Vista Verde (Faifo Lane, 1 Nguyen Thanh Son) and Q7 Riverside Complex (4 Dao Tri). Hours are roughly 07:00 or 08:00 to 22:00.

Finelife is Saigon Co.op’s premium format, focused on organic and imported items. Its store list includes Lumiere An Phu (277-279 Vo Nguyen Giap), the Zeit corner store (175 Nguyen Co Thach), Lexington (67 Mai Chi Tho), Urban Hill (51A Nguyen Van Linh, District 7) and Riviera Point (2 Nguyen Van Tuong, District 7).

Big-box supermarkets for the weekly shop

For cleaning products, rice, bottled water, kitchen basics and bulk buys, expats use the hypermarkets:

• MM Mega Market An Phu: in the An Phu – An Khanh new urban area, close to Thao Dien. Good for bulk meat, frozen goods, wine and household items.
• Emart Sala: basement B1 of Thiso Mall, Sala urban area in Thu Thiem. Clean and well organised, with plenty of Korean products.
• Lotte Mart Nam Saigon: 469 Nguyen Huu Tho, District 7. A large store with Korean products, clothes, appliances and a food court.

Farmers Market is a mid-sized fresh food chain with imported fruit, organic vegetables, meat and dry goods. Its store locator lists branches in the former District 1, District 2 (An Phu and An Khanh wards), District 7 and Binh Thanh, among others.

Delivery apps: GrabMart delivers groceries from supermarkets and convenience stores, usually within an hour, and Shopee is useful for non-perishables such as coffee, snacks and toiletries. Delivery is also the easiest way to handle heavy items like water and rice.
