These are Omicron symptoms compared to getting a cold

In the past few days, the weather in Vietnam has changed, erratic rain and sunshine have caused many people to have health problems such as runny nose, stuffy nose, chills, body aches… These symptoms are very similar to Omicron symptoms which make many people worried if  “I become F0”.

Doctor Do Cao Van Anh – Deputy Head of the Department, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine – told people that have the COVID-19 belongs to Omicron are not serious, except for some severe cases which have background disease that must be a concern.

Omicron symptoms commonly seen include fever, cough, tiredness, loss of taste or smell. Especially, in hot weather, but you don’t feel hot, instead of you will feel chills.

These Omicron symptoms are the same as the cold because that makes many people easy to confused.

“The difference is that colds are caused by many viruses, while COVID is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. In addition, flu and COVID are also different in the accompanying complications: while a cold only causes respiratory infections for a few days, COVID can cause complications such as pulmonary fibrosis, blood clotting disorders, creating blood clots that cause myocardial infarction, and lung disease…”, Dr. Van Anh said.

Because the symptoms are quite similar, if you want to know if you have a cold or Omicron infection, you only have to test, and to be accurate. You should test on the 3rd day since the onset of symptoms, Dr. Van Anh noted.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Do Van Dung – Dean of the Faculty of Public Health, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy – also said that according to published studies, colds and COVID-19 both have similar chills symptoms.

Chills are the feeling when the body starts to signal a fever. When the temperature goes from 37 degrees to 38 degrees or higher, you will feel chills. This is a common symptom that is not specific to a particular disease. To know if you have chills from a cold or an Omicron infection, you need to rely on epidemiology, which means you should get tested.

Omicron Variant: What can I do if I have it?

The treatment between a cold and COVID-19 is the same. However, because COVID-19 has the ability to spread quickly and easily leading to respiratory failure, it is necessary for us to isolate more closely and monitor more closely.

“The initial treatment between a cold and COVID-19 is not to take medicine. Many people have no symptoms, but taking medicine is wrong. It is best to treat symptoms, only take fever-reducing drugs when there is a high fever, vitamins (if any), take medicine according to symptoms”, Dr. Do Van Dung noted.
